8 Tips To Better Skin

Throughout most of my teenage life, I struggled with spots. Now that I'm 22 I thought it would all go away, but now I'm battling adult acne. I thought the odd spot or two was bad, but this is something else! It started off with just a few spots on the side of my chin, and I thought to myself, 'Damn. Well after a couple of days it'll fade away.'. Then more quickly appear, spreading across my chin onto the other side of my face, and next thing I knew, I had full blown adult acne across the bottom part of my face!

I mentioned this in my Catch Up post, but now my acne has got so bad I'm having laser treatment to get rid of the horrible little things. When going to my first consultation in London to see if my skin was a good match for the treatment, they went through a few things that would help clear the acne too. A few of you have mentioned to me your struggling with bad acne yourselves, so I wanted to share with you the tips I was given to help get rid of yours before they get as bad as mine now!

1. Do not cleanse your face too often.

Try to wash your face only in the morning and at night before you go to bed. Washing your face too much can cause your face to dry up, then causing your skin to produce more oil, which is the main contributor to acne itself!

2. Drink plenty of water.

However, make sure it's not sugary drinks or milk. The sugary drinks themselves have not been proven to cause acne, but sugar causes an increase in insulin, which then stimulates the hormone that produces spots. Milk, again, does not cause spots/acne itself, however it stimulates the hormones that produce acne.

3. Try not to touch your face as much as possible.

Your hands hold oils and dirt. The more you touch your face, the more dirt/oil is getting put onto your skin.

4. Try to de-stress.

A difficult one for me! Stress causes an increase in certain hormones, which leads to acne. Make sure you get plenty of sleep as not enough can increase stress. Also try relaxing techniques at home. Meditate, go for a walk, do whatever you find relaxes you.

5. Cleanse your face with an oil-free cleanser.

This one I feel has a real big impact on my skin. Looking at the ingredients of all the skin products I was using before shocked me. They all contained oil, which is the biggest problem for skin. Too much oil clogs up pores, which causes them to get inflamed and infected, which turns into that big red lump on your face. I was given some products from my clinic which are all oil-free, however I believe Clinique have some great oil-free cleansers.

6. Use oil-free make up.

Again, another massive problem for me! All my make up contained oil too! So after washing your face with an oil-free cleanser, you shouldn't just pile on more oil. I purchased some products from Clinique which are all oil-free, and I am loving them so far. I'll do a separate blog post about the range in the near future. I was also recommended Bare Minerals too.

7. Use clean towels and pillow cases.

Always make sure the towel you dry your face with and the pillow case you use are clean. I tend to change my towel every 3-4 days, and my pillow case every week. Your towel and pillow case can hold a lot of dirt, especially using them on a daily basis.

8. Moisturise your face.

I used to be afraid of doing this step. So many times I found using a moisturiser made my skin worse, but the trick is to just find the right moisturiser, you guessed it, an oil-free one! Again, I was provided with a moisturiser from my clinic, however Clinique is the next place I would go looking for one, just make sure it's oil-free! Moisturising your face is very important, as I mentioned earlier, if your skin dries out it produces more oil, so make sure it's moisturised so it doesn't have the need to produce more!

So there you have it! I hope these tips help you. Since starting my treatment, I have been sticking by things, and slowly but surely I am seeing some benefit.

Let me know if these tips help towards getting rid of any annoying little spots or some acne. I would recommend if you have been suffering with acne for a while like me to visit your doctor. I was embarrassed at first, but I was given a lot of attention and they really did understand. There is a lot of treatments to try so don't feel like you'll have acne forever! I promise you won't!

  1. Great tips! I used to touch my face all the time and then wondered why I was breaking out... I still get blemishes now but try not to stress so much about. Pretty sure the more I stress the worse it gets!

    1. Thank you! I didn't realise how much could affect your face! I can really see the benefits of sticking by this so I'm very happy. Stress definitely makes it much worse too, that's a massive problem for me... :)
